Assessment and reporting

Our teachers use a variety of strategies to assess student learning.

Teachers observe students' work in class and look closely at tasks throughout the year. They also formally assess a student's achievement based on the outcomes described in the syllabus of the subject.

As a parent or carer, you’ll receive a written report twice a year. It gives you a clear picture of your child’s achievements – what they know and can do.

In Years 7 to 10, we use the common grade scale in reporting. In Year 11, we use the Preliminary grade scale.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are assessed on achievement of competencies.

Assessments

We provide detailed information to students about what we expect from them throughout the year and how their work will be assessed. Students have a number of formal assessments throughout their schooling.

Assessment schedule

Assessment is the broad name for the collection and evaluation of evidence of a student's learning. It is integral to teaching and learning and has multiple purposes.

Assessment can enhance student engagement and motivation, particularly when it incorporates interaction with teachers, other students and a range of resources. NSW syllabuses promote an integrated approach to teaching, learning and assessment. Schools use syllabuses, assessment and reporting materials and Assessment Certification and Examination (ACE) requirements to develop school-based assessment programs. (NESA, 2019) To be eligible for the Higher School Certificate (HSC), students must comply with the entry requirements, course restrictions and the rules and regulations set by NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority). The school is required to provide an assessment program for student achievements for each course presented. It is emphasised that the assessment is a measure of actual achievement during the year of preparation for the Higher School Certificate examination, not a prediction or estimate of performance.

The purpose of assessment

Assessments are intended to provide an indication of a student’s attainment that is based on: A wider coverage of the syllabus than can be measured by the external examination, and Measures and observations obtained through the course rather than at a single examination. REPORTING RESULTS During the course, the school will provide information to students which will show their achievements relative to each other.  This will occur in the form of school reports. In Year 12, the final assessment mark will be moderated by NESA to ensure that students are not disadvantaged by the pattern of marks used by the school. The school’s judgement of the order of merit of the students and the relative difference between them will be retained in the process.

The School's responsibilities

In accordance with NESA’s requirements, this school has developed an Assessment Program for each course. We have:

  • Identified the student tasks which best measure the components
  • Specified weightings to be applied to each of the tasks to maintain the relative importance of each component
  • Scheduled the various tasks throughout the course
  • Prepared information for students, setting out the requirements of each course, and
  • Undertaken to keep records of the student’s performance on each task and provide information to the students on their progress.
