Fiver for a Farmer

School teachers wearing flanagans.

Georges River College Oatley Senior Campus prides itself on instilling the values of "Respect, Responsibility and Excellence". This week we put these values into practice as our school community banded together to help rural communities across Australia. We wanted to show our farmers and their communities that we care and that the GRC Oatley Senior Campus community was willing to help create a better future for all Australians.

Following record dry conditions, farmers in rural Australia are in a horror situation. As costs spiral and conditions worsen, even putting food on the table is becoming too hard for some families. Properties are too dry to produce any feed of their own and livestock are starving. Farmers have been forced to shoot thousands of animals. Farmers are revealing that this is the worst drought they have experienced in their lifetimes. Despite the urgent need for help, as a school we made the decision to help farmers overcome anxiety, fear and hardship and assist in building the resilience of all Australians.

On Tuesday the 4th of September, we held a mufti day to celebrate our rural communities and asked every member of a school community to donate a ‘Fiver ($5) for a farmer". Staff and students wore their jeans and flannelette shirt and raised an outstanding amount of $2650.

$2650 allowed the school to purchase 100 bales of hay and 13 hampers for much needed families. Thank you to our school community for helping us to make a difference.
